The Invergordon Fire Brigade was the community group who worked with artist Anna Smith on the creation of this dramatic design.
Fifteen competition winners from Invergordon Academy were also involved with this spectacular mural and joined in workshops with Anna to help design it. The students had the opportunity to paint on-site at two painting workshops each. The fire brigade uniforms and the different fire engines represent the historic timeline of the Invergordon fire brigade. The Royal Hotel, the subject chosen by the fire brigade and depicted in the mural, was a very emotive choice as a life was lost that night and some of the older residents of the town still remember the third of February 1972 with horror. It is almost impossible to put into words how important a part the 'Royal' played in the community and to the economy of the town. Local weddings were held there;tour buses stopped off overnight during the summer season.
The fire was probably the most traumatic in Invergordon's history and when the hotel was finally demolished it left a gaping hole at the very heart of the town. Invergordon has never fully recovered from its loss.
